Discover
the Tucson & Southern
Region of Arizona
Overview
Cities/Towns & Counties in this Region
Overview
Arizona's second largest
city, Tucson, lies in a desert valley and is surrounded by mountain
ranges. It is a city of contrasts, just like the Southern Region of
Arizona. Both the city and the region are steeped in "old west" history
and cultural diversity and the landscape of the area includes giant
saguaros, rolling ranchlands, vineyards, underground caverns, rocky
canyons with babbling streams, odd rock formations, forests and riparian
areas.
Tucson is home to The
Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block where you can see the past and
present Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Old West heritages come
together. The University of Arizona provides academic opportunities to
an already vibrant city, as does the Flandrau Science Center, the
Arizona State Museum, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tohono
Chul Park, the Tucson Botanical Gardens, and the Arizona Historical
Society Museum.
Just a short distance out of Tucson there are trail rides and dude
ranches, Saguaro National Park, petroglyph sites, the Old Tucson
Studios--home of movies and films, gunfights and guided movie tours, the
Pima Air and Space Museum, the Titan Missile Museum, the San Xavier del
Bac Misson, the Colossal Cave Mountain Park and more.
Southern Arizona encompasses the "Town Too tough To
Die"--Tombstone--where reenactors give visitors a glimpse of the old
west and the famous shootout between the Earp Brothers and the Clanton
gang at the OK Corral; the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park that keeps
the trek of Juan Bautista de Anza alive; the Tumacacori National
Historical Park with the remains of the first mission church in Arizona,
San Jose de Tumacacori and the story of Father Kino and the O'odham
people is told; Nogales, a popular border crossing town where you can
park your car and walk across to the shops and restaurants of Mexico;
the vineyards and wineries of Patagonia, Sonoita and Elgin; Fort
Huachuca in Sierra Vista, still an active military base and once home to
the famous Buffalo Soldiers; the copper mining town turned artist
village of Bisbee; the Kartchner Caverns State Park with it's
fascinating mineral formations, and much, much more.
Public lands, National and State Parks include: Chiricahua National
Monument, Coronado National Memorial; Fort Bowie National Historic Site;
Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area; Ironwood Forest National
Monument; Las Cienegas National Conservation Area; Organ Pipe Cactus
National Monument; Saguaro National Park; San Pedro riparian National
Conservation Area; Tumacacori National Historic Park; Coronado National
Forest; Baboquivari Peak, Redfield Canyon; Catalina State Park;
Kartchner Caverns State Park; Oracle State Park; Patagonia Lake State
Park; Picacho Peak State Park; Roper Lake State Park; Tombstone
Courthouse State Historic Park and Tubac Presidio State Historic Park.
