Borrego Springs has always been a spiritual place to relax and rejuvenate. Hiking through the sparse beauty of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park is one form of healing, and now this resort town has another. The St. Barnabas Retreat Center is run by Reverend Nancy Nagy, an Episcopal priest educated at the Obate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, who has directed spiritual retreats for over thirty years. The Retreat Center offers spiritual direction by teaching the use of their labyrinth, the art of listening, journal keeping, spiritual reading and communing with nature. Both directed retreats and private retreats are available, with meals supplied. Accommodations are available in Borrego Springs, some within walking distance to St. Barnabas. The labyrinth is something offered to any who make the trip to the center. It is used to center yourself both mentally and spiritually. There is one way in and one way out and you can walk the labyrinth, dance it, or sit in the center. (Please click on photos to enlarge) Labyrinths are found in many cultures worldwide and have been known to the human race for over 4,000 years. It has been used by many religions, cultures, peoples in different ways for many purposes. The experience of walking the labyrinth is different for each person and different each time you walk it. There is no "wrong" or "right" experience; it may invoke memories, help to clear your mind enough to find an answer to a problem you have worried about, bring you peace and tranquility, or lead you to some profound insight you have never had a chance to think about before. It is an amazing experience and an amazing tool that helps to slow us down, open our minds, rid ourselves of negative feelings, promotes creativity and helps to connect mind, body and spirit.
