About Chloride, Arizona

Nestled in the Cerbat Mountain Range at 4000 feet above sea level, Chloride is a small community in the north east corner of Arizona, close to US Hwy. 93, and just 53 miles south of the Hoover Dam, and 80 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada.
Chloride derives its name from Silver Chloride, the predominant mineral mined in the surrounding hills that was first found in the 1840’s. When first found, Silver Chloride was all but prevented from being mined by the local Hualapai Indian tribe until a treaty was signed in 1870. This allowed extensive mining of the mineral also accompanied by large amounts of gold, lead, zinc, and turquoise.
In 1871, Chloride was named the county seat of Mohave County as populations rose to their peak of around 5000 people. The Santa Fe Railroad decided to lay railway track to Chloride, building a depot that still stands almost fully intact today.
The present day population of between 150 and 250 people mainly exist as independent shop and restaurant owners, or workers in the nearby casino industry of Laughlin and Las Vegas in Nevada. Besides unique shopping opportunities, visitors can enjoy visiting
the old bank, old train station, jail, Cyanide Springs, murals, mines, and mine shafts.  The area also boasts hiking trails, biking, and horseback riding.
