Overview:
From the the top of Pikes Peak to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, this section of Colorado beckons to outdoor adventurers. The headwaters of the Arkansas River provides a challenge for whitewater rafters in the Browns Canyon and the Royal Gorge area. There is a rich Hispanic culture in the San Luis Valley and ranchers and farmers take advantage of the intermontane area of Alamosa and San Luis. Silver mining has left it's mark in historic Leadviille and San Luis, the oldest settled town in Colorado offers the Stations of the Cross Shrine, the R&R Market and the Vega Commons.

Attractions include the annual Sandhill crane migration in late March at the Monte Vista and Alamosa National Wildlife Refuges; Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the Matchless Mine; Pike's Peak; the Olympic Training Center; Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad; the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness area; the Sangre de Cristo Mountains; the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad; Mosquito Mountains; Buffalo Peaks Wilderness; Turner Farm; Royal Gorge Bridge - the highest suspension bridge in the world; the Royal Gorge Route Railroad; Manitou Cliff Dwellings; Cheyenne Mountain Zoo; Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway; American Numismatic Association Money Museum, Dr. Lester William Fire Museum; Garden of the Gods Nature Center; Seven Falls; Cripple Creek Butte Opera House; Mueller State Park; South Park Historical Foundation; Fort Garland Museum; Eleven Mil and Spinney Mountain State Parks; Healy House Museum & Dexter Cabin; Colorado Gators Farm; San Luis State Park, and more.

Scenic drives include crossing the Continental Divide three times by driving the length of the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway; Collegiate Peaks; Frontier Pathways; Gold Belt Tour; Los Caminos Antiguos, and Silver Thread drives.
