Mesa belongs to Maricopa County, which boasts the largest park system in the state, with 10 regional parks that encompass over than 120,000 acres of land. This park system was started in 1954, to preserve the natural areas of Arizona for future generations. A Federal Act (the Recreation & Public Purposes Act) of 1970 gave the county control of thousands of acres of Bureau of Land Management land. In 1992, the Federal Government and Maricopa County entered into a long term agreement allowing the county to manage the 10,000 plus surface acres of Pleasant Lake.
As a result, today more than one million people a year, come here to take advantage of the camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and the natural beauty of these areas that have been protected.
