Wild
Horse Wars!
America’s Largest Herd of Wild Horses
in Danger!
Wild
horses are a part of our western heritage and the largest herd of
wild horses, is in danger of being sold for slaughter by the Nevada
Department of Agriculture.
We just returned from the Virginia City region in Northern Nevada,
to take a look at these healthy, magnificent animals that are
arguably native to their area and are a part of the eco-system,
playing a major role in fire prevention with their grazing habits.
The horses are healthy, boasting shiny coats and full stomachs –
proving they can survive without human interference. The only help
they need from us humans is to prevent their slaughter. Throughout
history, horses have ‘worked for the man’ carrying soldiers in wars,
assisting in farming and agriculture, transportation, sports and
races, and more. Today, from wildfire prevention to tourism, these
horses continue to earn their keep - as they have always done. They
are symbols of freedom and are a part of our western heritage.
Wild horse advocates Willis Lamm, Lacy J. Dalton and Craig C. Downer were featured guest on SouthwestBlend.com’s ‘Champagne Sundays’ Online Radio Show. This show aired live on May 18th, 2008. Willis Lamm represents
Least Resistance Training Concepts (LRTC) Wild Horse Mentors, a
Volunteer Service Organization to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
and an authorized adoption agency for the State of Nevada Comstock
Wild Horse Program and for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Willis
Lamm is also a country western musician and we’ll talk about his
album ‘Hearts of Iron’ which features a collection of original
western songs and poetry, and is dedicated to America’s wild horses,
living symbols of the freedom of the old west.
Lacy J. Dalton
represents the Let ‘em Run Foundation, Inc. a non-profit
organization in partnership with government, business and community,
committed to the protection and preservation of wild horses and the
heritage of the American West. Famous for her country hits ‘Slip
Away’, ‘Takin' It Easy,’ ‘16th Avenue,’ ‘Everybody Makes Mistakes’
and more, Lacy J. Dalton will tell us a little about her music
including her latest album ‘The Last Wild Place Anthology’ – plus,
we’ll play her song ‘Let ‘em Run’ from her album ‘Wild Horse
Crossing’ which was recorded for the Let ‘em Run Foundation.
Craig C. Downer has
observed and studied the behavior, ecology and evolution of wild
horses and burros in his native state of Nevada, across the west,
and around the world. He received his AB in Biology in 1972 at the
University of Berkeley, his MS in Biology in 1976 at the University
of Nevada in Reno, and is finishing his Ph.D. in wildlife ecology.
Craig is the author of the book ‘Wild Horses: Living Symbols of
Freedom’, and he will be discussing the impact wild horses make to
their environment, how they prevent wildfires, the origins of the
horse, and more.
